Dr. Judith Madera (Wake Forest University), who specializes in African American and Caribbean literatures from the eighteenth century to present.

Dawn Raffel is a New York-based writer whose book Boundless as the Sky came out in January 2023.

Seen as an emblematic feature of the United States, American space has been represented, interpreted and questioned along multiple lines. Yet, these lines of critical inquiry often remain separate and discrete, treated from perspectives that do not take into account their interaction. They are also spelt along a particularly white, male trajectory. While it is generally agreed that ‘space’ is a major component of the American imagination, literary representations and artistic practices of space in postwar US have rarely been treated together as intersecting narratives. This conference sets out to consider postwar and contemporary conceptualizations and material practices of space in American literature and art, with the prospect of opening larger and more interdisciplinary vistas. The conference builds on the 2018 conference in Paris on The cartographic imagination. Art, literature and mapping in the United States, 1945-1980.

What are the prevailing and the underrepresented spatial imaginaries in postwar and contemporary America, and how are they represented in literature and art? How do these expressions relate to various Indigenous and colonial traditions of the spatial imagination? How do issues of whiteness, race, and the racial imagination shape spatial practices and imaginaries? What does the dialogue between literary texts, visual studies and art historical practices bring to the understanding of the construction and experience of space in American postwar and contemporary contexts? What are the major paradigms that arise? How do national and transnational, local and global, official and alternative narratives of space intersect in literature and art? How do the contexts of US imperialism and militarization play out in the representation of Cold War and ‘war on terror’ geographies?

En 1958, la maison d’édition Putnam s’apprête à publier aux États-Unis le chef d’oeuvre de Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita. Quelques mois avant la parution, l’auteur et son épouse, Véra Nabokov, pressentent que cette publication sera un tournant capital dans la carrière de Vladimir et décident de rendre compte des événements qui surviendront. Bien que quelques entrées soient écrites de la main de Vladimir, c’est principalement Véra qui tiendra ce journal jusqu’en août 1960. Elle y décrit le succès immédiat du roman, les sollicitations croissantes des journalistes, des éditeurs étrangers, des studios hollywoodiens, les demandes extravagantes des lecteurs et les diverses requêtes arrivant de toutes parts. 

Ce journal offre ainsi une perspective inédite sur l’effervescence créée dans la vie du couple par ce que Nabokov appelle « l’ouragan Lolita ». Il témoigne également du rôle déterminant que Véra a tenu dans la carrière littéraire de Nabokov, qui, sans doute à cause de la rareté de ses témoignages qu’elle a volontairement détruits, s’est trop souvent apparenté à celui d’une épouse silencieuse et effacée. Les pages du Journal, complètement inédites, démontrent qu’il n’en est rien et rendent compte pour la première fois de son engagement de chaque instant auprès de l’écrivain, de sa puissante clairvoyance, ainsi que de son humour vif, et parfois incisif. 

Le succès de Lolita (1955) a parfois occulté l’immense oeuvre littéraire, polymorphe et multilingue de Vladimir Nabokov. Au-delà des dix-sept romans qu’il a composés entre 1926 et 1974, il s’est également essayé à tous les genres littéraires : la poésie, le théâtre, l’essai, la critique littéraire. En exposant l’itinéraire exceptionnel de cet écrivain né à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1899, forcé deux fois à l’exil, naturalisé américain en 1945, puis regagnant l’Europe en 1959, où il publia les grands romans que sont Feu pâle (1962) et Ada (1969), ce Cahier de L’Herne propose de dresser un portrait plus juste et complet de cette oeuvre multiple. 

La publication de nombreux inédits de Nabokov rend ainsi compte de cette diversité : un extrait de la pièce de théâtre en vers La Tragédie de Mr. Morn ; un poème consacré à Superman ; des essais rédigés en russe et en anglais entre 1921 et 1945 sur différents sujets littéraires, artistiques et politiques ; des notes sur ses rêves nocturnes qui montrent son intérêt soutenu pour la dynamique du subconscient au-delà de sa critique acerbe de Freud ; des notes préparatoires pour ses oeuvres qui nous permettent d’explorer son laboratoire littéraire… On y retrouve aussi une correspondance de grande valeur, dont une lettre intime à sa gouvernante suisse ou encore un échange avec le premier traducteur français de Lolita. 

Les différents axes du Cahier permettent d’explorer la grande richesse de la carrière et de l’oeuvre de Nabokov, ainsi que sa résonance contemporaine : ses trajectoires translinguistiques et transcutlturelles, ses affinités personnelles et culturelles, l’analyse de sa création romanesque ou encore la postérité de son oeuvre.

Ce colloque, organisé par l’unité de recherche SEARCH de l’Université de Strasbourg, est né de deux propositions : celle de la pertinence des réflexions sur l’histoire des frontières, de leurs représentations et des pratiques de délimitations au sein du monde anglophone, d’une part, et celle de l’importance de la cartographie et de la contre-cartographie comme modes de construction esthétique et de pensée critique essentiels à l’étude des frontières, d’autre part.

Comment les frontières, en tant qu’entités spatiales et géopolitiques, font-elles simultanément l’objet de cartographies et de contre-cartographies, ces processus faisant ainsi émerger des discours alternatifs ou concurrents mettant au jour des idéologies sous-jacentes, des tactiques spécifiques de représentation et d’appropriation créative ? Comment la représentation des frontières dans la littérature, les arts, les discours historiques et la culture matérielle passe-t-elle par des gestes cartographiques et contre-cartographiques, qui suivent ou brouillent les lignes de la carte ?

Les communications pourront ainsi porter sur la question de la représentation des frontières dans le monde anglophone sous l’angle de la cartographie et de la contre-cartographie, dans des limites temporelles larges (du Moyen-Âge à l’époque contemporaine) et à travers divers types de discours et de supports médiatiques (littérature, arts, discours historiques, représentations géographiques et cartographiques, culture matérielle).

Les cartes sont des systèmes constructifs qui naissent tout autant de processus imaginaires et idéologiques que de procédures scientifiques. Aussi immuables et inaltérables qu’elles puissent apparaître, elles sont l’expression d’une imagination cartographique (Tiberghien), fondées sur des considérations contextuelles spécifiques, façonnées par des conventions de représentation, et informées par des épistémologies, des programmes politiques, et des approches culturelles données (Lounissi, Peraldo & Trouillet). Des points de vue fluctuants, des cadres politiques antagonistes mènent souvent à des perspectives différentes sur les cartes et le geste cartographique, qui sont à l’origine de processus de contre-cartographie, particulièrement prégnants dans la représentation de régions frontalières sous tension.  La prise de conscience de la dimension idéologique des cartes, devenue un objet central de la recherche universitaire au cours des dernières décennies, a fondamentalement bouleversé le paradigme qui associait les cartes et la cartographie à la transparence et l’exactitude épistémologiques et représentationnelles. L’avènement de la cartographie critique dans les années 1980 a consacré la carte comme “proposition sur le monde” et les cartographes comme “créateurs sélectifs de mondes” (Wood, 39-51). Plusieurs géographes ont ainsi souligné le pouvoir de manipulation des cartes, tels que James Ackerman dans Decolonizing the Map ou Mark Monmonier dans How to Lie with Maps, ouvrages qui analysent l’usage des cartes en contexte colonial, mais aussi à des fins de propagande politique et commerciale. Toutefois, on constate l’émergence récente d’une nouvelle approche de l’« ambivalence » de la cartographie, qui consiste non seulement à dénoncer sa rhétorique manipulatoire et sa complicité politique dans des entreprises coloniales et guerrières, mais aussi à reconnaître les possibilités immenses d’appropriation subversive qu’offre la cartographie en termes de réécriture de récits et de création de modes de représentation expérimentaux, collectifs ou singuliers. De la « déconstruction » de la cartographie (Harley), nous sommes ainsi passés à une phase de « reconstruction » (Besse), qui reconnaît la puissance créatrice de la carte, sa capacité à être appropriée de diverses manières, et la façon dont elle contribue à créer des formes de connaissance et de représentation esthétique hybrides au contact des discours littéraires et artistiques.

Suite à la démocratisation de la cartographie et à l’émergence de Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG), la cartographie s’est « libérée », s’ouvrant ainsi à des communautés alternatives de cartographes non-professionnels (Pinder). Les stratégies de contre-cartographie ont fait florès dans les dernières décennies et plusieurs atlas collectifs ont été publiés, tentant de rendre visible sur les cartes des histoires passées sous silence, des toponymies et des groupes marginalisés, et d’étudier à nouveaux frais des siècles d’histoire (Solnit ; Bhagat et Mogel ; Russert et Battle-Baptiste). Toutes ces formes de contre-cartographie ont contribué à réinventer la pratique de la cartographie, et à donner une place à des histoires et des noms de lieux oubliés ou délibérément effacés.

Ce colloque vise donc à créer un dialogue interdisciplinaire entre la géographie, l’histoire, la littérature et les arts, dans la perspective thématique, théorique et critique offerte par ces notions-clés (le croisement de la cartographie, de la contre-cartographie et des frontières dans le monde anglophone). Un atelier itinérant (walkshop) sur les traces de la frontière Strasbourg / Kehl sera organisé par nos quatre invité.e.s canadien.ne.s lors du colloque, tous.te.s les participant.e.s sont chaleureusement invité.e.s à y participer.

This conference organized by the SEARCH research group at the University of Strasbourg starts from two intellectual premises: the first consists in acknowledging the continued relevance of a reflection on the history of borders, border representations and bordering practices in the English-speaking world, and the second in asserting the importance of mapping and countermapping as powerful modes of aesthetic construction and critical thinking in relation to borders.

How do borders as spatial and geopolitical entities emerge as objects of simultaneous mapping and countermapping leading to competing or alternative discourses that reveal underlying ideologies, specific tactics of representation and creative appropriations? How do literature, art, historical discourses and material culture perform acts of mapping and countermapping in the representation of borders, alongside or against maps?

We welcome proposals that examine the representation of borders in the English-speaking world from the perspective of mapping and countermapping within a large temporal framework (from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period) and in a variety of discourses and media (literature, art, historical discourses, geographic and cartographic representations, material culture).

Maps as constructive systems are the result of imaginative and ideological processes as well as of scientific procedures. Although they may appear immutable and unalterable, they are expressions of a cartographic imagination (Tiberghien), predicated on specific contextual considerations, shaped by representational conventions, informed by given epistemologies, political agendas, cultural approaches (Lounissi, Peraldo & Trouillet). Shifting points of view and competing political frameworks often lead to distinct perspectives on maps and mapping, giving rise to phenomena of countermapping, especially in representations of tense borderland regions. The ideological dimensions of the map that have become prominent subjects of academic research over the past decades have completely changed an older paradigm that associated maps and map-making with absolute epistemological and representational accuracy and transparency. The advent of critical cartography in the 1980s consecrated the map as a “proposition about the world” and map-makers as “selective creators of a world” (Wood, 39-51). The manipulative power of the map was highlighted by geographers like James Ackerman in Decolonizing the Map or Mark Monmonier in How to Lie with Maps, which examine maps in contexts of colonialism, as well as political and commercial propaganda. However, we have recently witnessed a distinct approach in the acknowledgement of the “ambivalence” of cartography (Besse and Tiberghien, 12), which has led to the denunciation of its manipulative rhetoric and political complicity in colonial and warfare projects, but also to the celebration of its huge potential for creative and subversive appropriation in the retelling of alternative histories, in the emergence of experimental modes of representation, communal or subjective. From the “deconstruction” of cartography (Harley) we have moved towards a phase of “reconstruction” (Besse) that recognizes the creative power of the map over time, its adaptability to multiple appropriations, and its participation in the creation of hybrid forms of knowledge and aesthetic representation together with literary and artistic discourses.

After the democratization of cartography and the emergence of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography became “unbound” and opened up to alternative communities of map-makers who are not professional cartographers (Pinder). Counter-mapping strategies have thrived over the past decades and various community atlases have been produced which have attempted to put silenced histories, toponymies and marginalized groups on the map, reexamining centuries of history (Solnit; Bhagat and Mogel; Russert and Battle-Baptiste). All these forms of counter-mapping have reinvented the practice of cartography, making space for obliterated histories and place names.

The conference seeks to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue between geography, history, literature and art within the combined thematic, theoretical and critical orientation provided by our keywords (the nexus of borders, mapping and countermapping in the English-speaking world). Our four Canadian guests will lead a “walkshop” during the conference on the Strasbourg/Kehl border which all conference participants are invited to attend.

Summary

In the early modern period, the humanist practice of translation of sacred as well as secular texts created new readerships in the vernacular for authoritative texts, religious or classical. As the circulation of languages within Europe reshuffled hierarchies between classical languages and vernacular tongues, transmission via translation was not only vertical, but also horizontal, and the contacts between European languages enabled the expansion of local lexicons from sources other than Latin or Greek.

This volume focuses on the role of translation and lexical borrowing in the expansion of specific English lexicons (erudite, technical, or artisanal) as evidenced in printed texts from the early modern period. It considers how language shapes identity in social, religious, philosophical, artistic, and literary contexts, and is in turn shaped by claims of social, religious, philosophical, artistic, and literary identity.
